This volume does not simply teach how to “produce overtones”: it proposes a deeper way of listening to, studying, and understanding the voice. Through the 4L METHOD, Giovanni Bortoluzzi guides the reader along a progressive path that combines vocal practice, body awareness, acoustics, scientific research, and ethnomusicology. Overtone singing and throat singing are often presented as astonishing effects, exotic curiosities, or displays of spectacular skill. Here, on the contrary, they are addressed in their true complexity: as practices rooted in precise vocal mechanisms, selective listening to harmonics, the relationship between voice and resonance, as well as living traditions, people, repertoires, and cultural contexts.
From the exploratory and meditative possibilities of the first two levels to the tools designed for performance building in the subsequent ones, the 4L METHOD offers a clear, verifiable guide that respects the uniqueness of every voice. It offers neither rigid formulas nor shortcuts: it invites you to observe, listen, experiment, and develop lasting skills. Particular attention is dedicated to the traditional styles of Tuvan khöömei—Khöömei, Kargyraa, and Sygyt—and to a rigorous comparison with other complex vocal practices, such as Sardinian canto a tenore. Technique, physiology, perception, culture, and history are neither confused nor artificially separated: they support one another to restore the voice to its full richness.
A teacher, musician, and researcher, Giovanni Bortoluzzi has been studying and practicing overtone singing since 2013. Trained by Tuvan and international masters, he has deepened his knowledge through fieldwork as well as phoniatric and instrumental investigations. In 2023, he received the “For Mastering the Kargyraa Technique” award in Tuva, and in 2025, the “Best Kargyraa Performance” recognition at the Echoes of the Steppe Festival in Switzerland. Aimed at students, teachers, musicians, and researchers, this volume proposes an approach to overtone singing that goes beyond any simplification, placing conscious listening and respect for its multiple technical, cultural, and musical dimensions at the center.
